When our futures look bleak, let’s face it… some pretty wild ideas pop into our minds. In Chapter 7 of my book, “Tax Debt Rule #1: There’s ALWAYS a Solution,” I share some of the far-fetched ideas I have fielded over the years. Here’s an excerpt from that chapter…

“I know that having a tax debt can lead to many sleepless nights. And when you’re lying there, staring at the ceiling, your mind can wander down some strange paths. This is when some of the far-fetched “maybe” solutions pop into your head.

The three most common “what if I…” thoughts that are often shared with me are:

1. Can I go to Mexico, get a fake ID, return to America as an immigrant, and start over under a new name?
2. What are my chances of leaving the country and never returning? Can I be a tax fugitive in Brazil?
3. Can we counter-sue the IRS? I heard that Congress did not actually ratify the 16th Amendment, so they can’t legally ask me to pay, right?”

In Chapter 7, I explore these ideas and more in greater detail. I discuss why these ideas won’t work and share the outcome of a few situations when people tried them. In summary, I share the following:

“It may sound sexy to pack a bag, grab some stacks of cash and a fake passport out of the safe hidden in the back of your closet, and blow up your home as you drive down the street to catch a plane headed overseas. But it’s unrealistic, which is why we never hear about similar stories in the news. It’s not a real scenario that plays out. It’s fiction, and it will not go well for you.

It is far easier to suck it up and deal with the tax debt; it may take a few years, and it may be a bit painful to limit your other desires as you knuckle down and deal with the tax debt. But, in the end, you’ll come out the other side and won’t have to worry anymore about it. You’ll be able to refocus on building your financial future. Remember, there’s ALWAYS a solution… doing something drastic like these ideas just isn’t worth it.”
